Fifty, Fabulous & Fully Alive A love letter to the women we are becoming

This Monday, May 11th, I turn 50. And I have to say, I'm arriving at this milestone with a full heart, a huge smile, and more than a little excitement.

When I was a little girl, 50 felt old. In my young mind, a 50-year-old woman wore tea dresses and pearls, had a sensible set hairstyle, and was somehow… done. Finished. Settled into a quieter chapter of life. I say this with the greatest affection, because that image was simply what I knew — but oh, how my perspective has shifted.

Because here I am, standing on the edge of 50, feeling fit, feeling healthy, feeling fabulous — and yes, more than a little bit sexy, thank you very much! The women I see around me at this age are vibrant, bold, wise, and magnetic. We are not fading — we are glowing. And I truly believe that women at every age deserve to be celebrated, not quietly sidelined.

But more than anything, I feel a deep and overwhelming sense of gratitude. Turning 50 is a privilege — one that not everyone gets. So many beautiful souls never make it this far, and I do not take that lightly for even a moment. With age comes wisdom, resilience, a knowing of yourself that no younger version of you could quite possess. I am so genuinely, humbly thankful for every single year, every lesson, every laugh line, and every story that has brought me to this extraordinary moment.

The Woman I Was Then

Growing up, I absorbed the world’s messages about ageing the way we all do — quietly, without even realising it. Middle age was portrayed as a kind of retreat from life. Women of 50 in the films I watched, the magazines I flipped through, the world I grew up in, seemed to exist in the background. Sensible. Settled. Safe. They weren’t the ones having adventures or turning heads. They were the ones offering cups of tea and sage advice from the sidelines.

There was a kind of gentleness to that image — and I want to be clear, there is nothing wrong with gentleness, with tea dresses, with pearls. Those things are beautiful. But the idea that a woman’s most vibrant, exciting, visible years were somehow behind her at 50? That is a story I am very happy to leave behind.

The Woman I Am Now

At 50, I feel more myself than I ever have. There is a confidence that comes with this age that I simply didn’t have in my twenties or thirties. Back then, I was still figuring out who I was, still looking outward for reassurance, still caring far too much about what other people thought. Now? I know my mind. I know my worth. And I know that life is far too short and far too precious to spend it shrinking.

I work hard on my health and fitness — not out of vanity, but because I want to feel good. I want energy. I want strength. I want to move through the world with vitality and joy. And I make no apologies for wanting to look great while I do it. Because the two are not mutually exclusive — taking pride in how you present yourself and having depth and wisdom are not opposing forces. You can be thoughtful and fabulous. You can be wise and a little bit sexy. Women of our age are allowed to take up space. Boldly.

Celebrating the Women Around Us

Something I have noticed as I’ve moved through my forties is just how extraordinary the women around me are. Women in their fifties, sixties, seventies and beyond — women who have lived, who have loved, who have weathered storms and come out the other side with grace and fire intact. These women are not background characters. They are the most interesting people in the room.

With age comes a richness that simply cannot be faked or rushed. The wisdom that comes from truly living — from navigating heartbreak and joy, loss and new beginnings, failure and reinvention — is something that only time can give you. And that wisdom is breathtaking. These women have earned every single year, and they wear them beautifully.

So this is my celebration of all of us. Not just the women turning 50 alongside me, but every woman who has walked this path before us, lighting the way. You are seen. You are valued. You are magnificent.

A Privilege, Not a Given

I cannot write this without pausing to hold space for something important. Reaching this milestone is not something I take for granted. I have known people who never made it to 50 — people who were taken too soon, whose stories ended before they were finished. And I think of them often, especially now.

Every birthday is a gift. Every year is a chapter. And the fact that I get to stand here, healthy and happy and full of life at 50, feels like the most extraordinary privilege. I do not want to waste a single moment of it — not on self-doubt, not on apology, not on making myself smaller so that others feel more comfortable.

This is my time. And I intend to live it fully.

Here’s to 50

So if you’re reading this and you’re approaching a milestone birthday of your own — whether it’s 40, 50, 60 or beyond — I want you to know this: you are not fading. You are not past your best. You are not done. You are becoming. And the version of you that exists right now, shaped by everything you have lived and learned and overcome, is the most magnificent version yet.

Age is not the enemy. Age is the reward.

Here’s to 50. Here’s to all of us. Here’s to every glorious, hard-earned, beautifully lived year.

With love and gratitude,
Emma Churchill
