Five Gentle Pilates Routines to Keep You Moving Through the Winter Months

Winter can make even the most dedicated mover feel a little slower, tighter, and less motivated. Colder weather, darker evenings, and busy festive schedules can all nudge us away from the routines that help us feel strong, grounded, and well. But this is exactly when Pilates becomes such a valuable anchor.

At Yoga and Pilates, my focus is always on helping you move in a way that supports your real life - your posture, your energy, your aches and niggles, and most importantly, your overall wellbeing. Pilates has always offered a reliable structure for this. It keeps the spine supple, the joints mobile, and the deep postural muscles switched on - especially through the winter months when the body naturally tends to stiffen.

Having taught Pilates for over 15 years, and having worked with hundreds of clients both in-person and online , I see the same pattern every year: keeping movement gentle, regular, and functional through winter makes an enormous difference. Many of my clients tell me their back or shoulder pain eases, their posture improves, and they simply feel more themselves when they keep to a routine - even if it’s just 10–15 minutes a day.

Here are five gentle Pilates routines designed to keep you moving, comfortable, and connected to your body throughout the winter season.

1. Winter Morning Mobility Flow (10–12 minutes)

A short, grounding routine to wake up the spine, lubricate the joints, and gently switch on the core - ideal before you take on the day.

What it includes

  • Spinal articulation (pelvic tilts, spine curls)

  • Gentle rotation to warm the rib cage

  • Shoulder mobility to release overnight tension

  • Standing balance work to wake the stabilisers

Why it helps

Overnight, the discs of the spine naturally rehydrate, which is why many people feel a bit stiff first thing. Warming the body gradually reduces that early-morning tightness and supports healthy posture throughout the day - something I hear regularly from clients who practise morning mobility consistently .

2. Core Stability for Cold Days (12–15 minutes)

A gentle strengthening sequence that warms the deep core muscles without strain or intensity.

What it includes

  • Supine ab prep work

  • Toe taps and knee folds

  • Dead bugs with optional resistance band

  • Gentle oblique twists

Why it helps

In winter, we tend to sit more - often with shoulders rounded and the pelvis tucked. These slow, controlled movements help reset deep core engagement and support the lower back, something I emphasise in every class. Many clients tell me this type of work keeps their back pain at bay, especially when done regularly .

3. Winter Warmer Mobility & Stretch (15–20 minutes)

A soothing combination of Pilates mobility and gentle stretching to open the hips, release the spine, and reduce winter tension.

What it includes

  • Side-lying leg series for hip mobility

  • Cat–cow and thread-the-needle

  • Seated hamstring and hip stretches

  • Thoracic extension work

Why it helps

This routine combats one of winter’s biggest issues - feeling compressed, tight, or sluggish. Many clients come back from colder days out and tell me how much these sequences help them “feel taller” afterwards. One even reported measuring half an inch taller at her GP appointment - likely a sign of improved posture and decompression .

4. Gentle Strength for Dark Evenings (15 minutes)

A calm but effective strength routine to support bone health, joint stability, and overall functional fitness.

What it includes

  • Standing leg sequences

  • Glute activation with looped band

  • Light weighted ball work for upper body

  • Magic circle thigh and arm conditioning

Why it helps

Strength doesn’t have to be fast or forceful. Winter is a wonderful time to focus on mindful strengthening - something I build into every Pilates class through varied equipment and adaptable options . These movements help you maintain strength without overwhelming the nervous system at the end of a long day.

5. Wind-Down Floor Routine for Restful Evenings (10 minutes)

A restorative Pilates-inspired sequence to settle the mind, ease muscular tension, and prepare for a good night’s sleep.

What it includes

  • Breath-led diaphragmatic breathing

  • Release work for hips and low back

  • Gentle rotation

  • A short guided relaxation

Why it helps

Pilates isn’t only about strength - it’s also about presence, breath, and calming the mind. During the winter months, when stress can peak and daylight is scarce, these quieter practices become invaluable. Many clients tell me these slower evening routines help them unwind and sleep more deeply.

Why Gentle Pilates Is So Powerful in Winter

  • Creates warmth through mindful, steady movement

  • Supports immunity by reducing stress and keeping circulation healthy

  • Maintains joint lubrication when the weather cools

  • Improves posture (especially when coats, scarves, and hunching set in!)

  • Eases winter aches, particularly in the back and shoulders

  • Boosts mental wellbeing - regular practice gives structure, calm, and space to breathe

Winter movement doesn’t need to be strenuous. It needs to be consistent, supportive, and kind. The body responds beautifully to gentle, repeated mobility and strength work, and Pilates offers exactly that blend.

Wherever you choose to practise this winter, let it be gentle. Let it be consistent. And let it make you feel more at home in your body.
